Complex of Test Rigs for Radiation Safety Research
Technology of Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute
1. The "U-3" Utility Research Nuclear Reactor
The reactor serves as a fixed source of neutron and gamma radiation for laboratory tests and investigations on biological shielding optimisation, evaluation of radiation accident scenarios, assessment of electronic hardware resistance to radiation effects.
- Rated power of the reactor - 5·104 W;
- Maximum distillate temperature at the reactor core output end - 39° C.
2. The "AK-25" Full-size Reactor Compartment Model
This test rig is intended for the following tasks:
- Modelling leakage accidents with reactor circuits in enclosed compartments;
- Determining radioactive aerosol settling rate from steam-air mixture to equipment surfaces;
- Testing shielding and decontamination coatings under different ambient temperature, air humidity and coating temperature conditions.
Test rig characteristics:
Aerosol chamber:
- volume 29 m3,
- operating pressure 8,82·104 N/m2,
- coolant temperature 85° C,
- coolant humidityup to 100 %.
Coolant Supply & Injection System:
- 1st circuit coolant injection temperature 300° C,
- 1st circuit coolant injection pressure 1,47·107 N/m2,
- 1st circuit coolant injection volumeup to 10 l,
- 2st circuit coolant injection temperature 290°C,
- 2st circuit coolant injection pressure 3,5·106 N/m2,
3. The "GRAD" Test Rig
The test rig is intended for metrological checks, calibration and research for submerged gamma radiation detectors and fluid radiometers. The test rig allows handling detectors with weights within 500 kg and sizes within 1 - 3 m.
